Hiking in the Black Mountains and Toe River Valley near Burnsville, North Carolina is a very rewarding experience. The area has a wide variety of terrain to explore ranging from lush river valleys to majestic mountain ridges.  At  6,684 foot elevation, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. 

High Peaks Leads Fire Tower Adventure Nov. 16 CANCELLED

Join the N.C. High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, Nov. 16 for a challenging hike to Pinnacle Mountain Fire Tower in Tennessee. Hikers should be rewarded with tremendous 360-degree views of the surrounding terrain.

The 9.6-mile hike is rated as very strenuous, as hikers will climb 1,400 feet on their way to the popular fire tower, which is located near Erwin, Tn. Although the hike is long and the climb significant, the trail is well-developed and not too steep, averaging a grade of less than 6 percent.

High Peaks Leads Stroll At Lake James Nov. 9

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, Nov. 9 for a pleasant stroll at Lake James near Marion.

The 3.5-mile loop is rated as easy as it will follow a graded trail that offers beautiful lake views. There may also be late fall color at this low elevation.

High Peaks Hosts Open House at Fire Tower Oct. 19

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a special treat when the club hosts an Open House at the Green Knob Fire Tower off the Blue Ridge Parkway on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors should have grand views of the vibrant fall color from the observation deck and cabin, both of which are normally locked for safety and security reasons.

High Peaks Leads Douglas Falls Stroll Oct. 12

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, Oct. 12 for a stroll to picturesque Douglas Falls and a visit to an historic fully restored fire tower in Dillingham.

The stroll of 1.5 miles is rated as easy, although the footing can be uneven and hiking poles may be advisable. There should be early fall color, and the falls is one of the area’s most scenic.

Mt. Mitchell Superintendent to Keynote High Peaks Annual Meeting Oct. 5

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for its annual meeting on Saturday Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the meeting room on the second floor of the Yancey County Library in Burnsville. Special Guest Speaker will be Mount Mitchell State Park Superintendent Kevin Bischof.

The general public is invited to learn more about the area’s very active hiking club, and all High Peaks members are encouraged to attend.

High Peaks Leads Mt. Mitchell Ramble Sept. 28

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, Sept. 28 for a ramble around the tallest mountain in the Eastern U.S. as the club leads an early-fall excursion on Mt. Mitchell.

High Peaks Offers Full Weekend of Fun Sept. 7-8

Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a challenging hike up Mt. Mitchell on Saturday, Sept. 7 in celebration of the 42nd birthday of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, followed by a tour of the area’s picturesque swinging bridges led by a noted local author on Sunday, Sept. 8.

High Peaks Leads High-Elevation Hikes Aug. 17

Beat the summer heat and score some spectacular views by joining the NC High Peaks Trail Association for one of two hikes on Saturday, Aug. 17, with both venturing to high elevations along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
